Here is a follow up article to yesterday's post that talks about the popularity of cloud computing due to recession.
The themes are the same:
1. Low cost of entry
2. Scale up and down ability
3. Trusting your provider

We used Amazon's EC2 at work.
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed cheap and easy to get started on.
When we want more processing power, we can either spin off new VMs or upgrade our VMs to be more powerful. The former is more scalable and that is what we went with because our workload varies a lot. However, it was tedious because each VM had to have its own separate virtual disk, and we really just wanted them all to share the same disk.
Also, we found that the performance was not too good. A VM with some reported clockrate would not perform even remotely as fast as a physical computer of the same clockrate. We ended up buying a used server for about the same cost of 2 or 3 months of EC2.
